Bulbul Facts
Bulbul, common name for members of a large family of Eurasian songbirds.
Bulbuls are short-necked slender passerines. The tails are long and the wings short and rounded. In almost all species the bill is slightly elongated and slightly hooked at the end. They vary in length from 13 cm for the Tiny Greenbul to 29 cm in the Straw-headed Bulbul.
Bulbuls can be serious pests in fruit-growing areas, and their importation into the United States is now prohibited. The bulbul often mentioned in Persian poetry was a nightingale.
Kingfishers of all three families beat their prey to death, either by whipping it against a tree or by dropping it on a stone. They are able to see well both in air and under water. To do this, their eyes have evolved an egg-shaped lens able to focus in the two different environments.
