The guava is native to the Caribbean. Its skin is thin, light yellow and blushed with pink. The guava is a good source of several vitamins and minerals including vitamin C, calcium, potassium, iron, carotenoids (vitamin A), and folate.  It is also a good source of fiber, which is known to help prevent gastrointestinal cancers as well as lowering cholesterol levels.

The most common variety is yellow, but the colors of various species can be white, yellow, red, purple or black. The better varieties have a soft rind that is edible.
